Tithing: not for Christians

Each one should give what he has decided in his heart to give , not out of regret or compulsion. For God loves a cheerful giver. (2 Corinthians 9:7)

A Christian will naturally feel a desire to use his resources to help God to show his love to people. This is a God-given desire. Each Christian should pray and think carefully about how to best use the financial resources entrusted to him. Let God lead you. God leads each believer differently. Embrace the unique role that God has given to you. Enjoy the special ways in which He leads you to invest your resources in His work. Enjoy the freedom that you have in Christ!

Never allow anyone to make you feel or think that you have an obligation to give your money to a particular person, cause, or religious organization. A Christian should never give because he feels forced to do so. A Christian leader should NEVER compel or coerce Christians to give them money.

The desire of Christians to share their resources with God is often exploited by religious leaders. They take advantage of people in order to get their money. Christians should NEVER give money to a person, cause or organization because someone has put pressure on them to donate. If a person is applying pressure to give money to a religious cause or to a religious leader, challenge him. Such a tactic is NOT Christian…

One popular approach that is used to manipulate Christians is to claim that God requires them to “tithe” (to give 10% of their money) to a religious organization. They compel. They put pressure. They use guilt and emotional manipulation. They use social pressure. They intimidate tenderhearted, sincere Christians into tithing by using stern and abusive words. They quote verses from The Law (such as Malachi 3:8), which say that “you have robbed God.” Don’t accept this. It is twisting the meaning of the scripture. It is a lie! It is an attempt to get you to give out of compulsion, regret and guilt. It is an attempt to rob YOU! You are being manipulated. This is spiritual abuse. This is tyranny. Do not tolerate it.

People who command Christians to tithe based on the words of Malachi are misusing scripture. Malachi was a prophet living in Israel during the period when the people of Israel were commanded to live according to the Law of Moses, which required them to tithe (see Numbers 18:24). Malachi didn’t speak to Christians. Instead, he spoke directly to the Israelites:

“The oracle of the word of the Lord to Israel by Malachi.” (Malachi 1:1)

Malachi was NOT speaking to Christians! He was speaking to the Israelites, who were commanded to follow The Law.

What does the Bible say to Christians about following commands of The Law, such as tithing? It tells us that Christians should NOT attempt to live according to The Law:

“For all who rely on works of the law are under a curse; for it is written, ‘Cursed be everyone who does not abide by all things written in the Book of the Law, and do them’.” (Galatians 3:10)

God does not want us to try to please Him by attempting to live according to The Law (for example, by tithing). If we do so, we displease God and we are cursed by God!!! Instead, God wants us to live by faith and to accept the righteousness that He gives to us by His grace. He does not want us to live under the compulsion of The Law. He wants us to enjoy the freedom that is in Christ:

You were running the race so well. Who has held you back from following the truth? It certainly isn’t God, for he is the one who called you to freedom. This false teaching is like a little yeast that spreads through the whole batch of dough!  (Galatians 5:7-9)

Carefully study Paul’s letter to the believers in Galatia. It presents how God despises people who compel Christians to live according to The Law. The letter also describes the evil motives of such people. God will judge people who confuse Christians by teaching that we should obey The Law:

I am trusting the Lord to keep you from believing false teachings. God will judge that person, whoever he is, who has been confusing you. (Galatians 5:10)

NEVER donate because you have been made to feel guilty or because you have been forced or compelled to give. Do not allow anyone to manipulate you or to abuse you emotionally. Such people are evil. This is NOT God’s model for Christians! Do not tolerate anyone misusing the scriptures. Stand firm. RUN FROM SUCH PEOPLE!!

Ask God to lead you in the investment of your financial resources for accomplishing His purposes in this world. Follow His leading. Enjoy the freedom that God has given to you!!

I have had the joy of walking with the Lord for 40 years. I'm so thankful for his salvation, and for His love and leading through the years.
